Critical Funding Need
Alameda has always supported our community schools with local funding. This funding accounts for 20% of the current AUSD budget and allows AUSD to attract and retain quality educators as the cost of housing and living continues to rise in our community. It also allows for the District to provide educational technology, support career technical education, and sustain strong programs in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math, preparing high school students to compete at the top colleges and in the 21st-century workforce.
Without these sources of funding, the District will be faced with deep cuts and layoffs up to $24 million annually. The State has proven to be an unreliable funding partner. To fill this gap, Alameda schools need local funding like many other neighboring school districts in the Bay Area.
About Measure E
To ensure a stable funding source, the AUSD Board of Trustees has placed a measure on the March 2024 ballot to renew and consolidate two parcel taxes without increasing tax rates. Measure E will:
Sustain strong academic programs in reading, writing, math, arts, and sciences
Attract and retain high-quality teachers by keeping salary and benefits competitive
Support teachers and counselors in keeping struggling students on the right track
Protect art, music, and performing arts programs
And no one will pay a single penny more in taxes.
Continued Fiscal Accountability and Local Control
Measure E includes the same fiscal accountability as past measures, including:
Proceeds will be controlled locally and will not be taken away by the State
None of the money raised can be used for administrators’ salaries or pensions
Independent citizens’ oversight and mandatory annual audits will ensure funds are spent as promised
Senior citizen homeowners will continue to be eligible for an exemption from the tax
