Frequently Asked Questions

  • Measure E, on the March 5, 2024 ballot, will renew expiring local funding that is the key to our great schools, high-quality teachers, and a strong Alameda community. Excellent teachers and great schools make Alameda a great place to live. By keeping our local schools strong, we keep the community strong.

  • This not an additional tax. Measure E simply combines and replaces two older tax measures -- Measures B1 and A -- that are about to expire. The new measure will provide the same crucial revenue to our schools as the existing measures do without increasing the current tax rates

  • Without Measure E, our schools would lose $24,000,000 annually. That’s 20% of the overall budget! Without this critical local funding, schools will be forced to slash valuable programs, lay off educators, and cut teacher salaries. As Alameda housing costs continue to rise, we need Measure E, so we do not lose teachers to better-paying schools and more affordable communities.

  • Measure E would continue to be used to:

    • Sustain strong academic programs in reading, writing, math, arts, and sciences

    • Attract and retain excellent teachers

    • Support teachers and counselors in keeping struggling students on the right track

    • Maintain a thriving network of local schools

    • Prepare students for 21st-century jobs and careers

  • Currently, the District relies on two existing revenue sources to support our quality schools and attract and retain excellent teachers. Measure E consolidates these two funding sources to a single measure to renew funding without increasing local taxes.

  • Measure E includes strict fiscal accountability requirements, including:

    • By law, every penny must support Alameda schools

    • No funds can be taken away by the State

    • Independent citizens’ oversight and mandatory annual audits are required

    • Senior citizens and individuals with disabilities are eligible for an exemption from the cost

  • Yes. The Independent Citizens’ Oversight Committee has reviewed every penny of parcel tax funding and consistently found that AUSD has spent all funds on voter-approved projects and programs. You can read the latest reports by visiting tinyurl.com/AUSDPTOversight.

  • In June 2022, local voters supported our Alameda schools with the passage of bond Measure B. Bond measures provide dedicated one-time funding for updating our classrooms and labs. On the other hand, parcel tax revenues allow districts to invest in ongoing expenditures like teachers and academic programs, which cannot be funded by bond money.

  • Yes, in 2016 and 2020 voters supported our locals schools with the passage of Measure B1 and Measure A. Measure E consolidates these two measures into one, renewing funding without increasing taxes.

  • Yes! Measure E provides a full exemption from the cost of the measure for senior citizen homeowners aged 65 and over and those exempt from the expiring measure need not reapply. This optional exemption is available to ensure the cost of the measure is not a burden to those on fixed or limited incomes. Low-income homeowners with disabilities are also eligible for an exemption.

  • All funds from Measure E would benefit local schools only. No funds could be taken by the State or used for other purposes.

  • Strong Alameda schools contribute to what makes Alameda such a great place to live. Even if you do not have school-age children, supporting quality education can help keep our community and property values strong.

  • In order to pass, Measure E must be supported by two-thirds of those who cast a vote on the measure in the March 5th election. It is critical we all take the time to vote YES in this election to help Alameda continue to keep our local schools strong.
